Movie Review: Frank & Lola (2016)
Frank & Lola has two incredibly appealing leads in Michael Shannon and Imogen Poots, and it has some wonderful direction from first-time director Matthew Ross.
And it doesn’t have all that much else.
This movie definitely has a weak script, and nearly all of the film’s problems come from that. The actors are great in their roles, but they can only go so far when their characters are thinly written.
This is a tale of jealousy spun out of a relationship that’s sort of disturbing to begin with, given the age difference, but I suppose that’s the point. Given how far Michael Shannon’s Frank goes, you’d think we’re meant to be sympathetic towards Poots’s Lola, and we are to a certain extent, at least at first.
But both characters are kind of awful people in their own way. I think the two leads are good enough to make this movie worth watching, but this is a movie that makes me think “what could have been.”
