Movie Review: G.I. Blues (1960)

--

Perhaps more than any other Elvis movie, this one absolutely excels with the soundtrack, but drags whenever the King isn’t singing. I’ve always wondered why they didn’t try to pack more music into Elvis’s films, because that’s what he’s truly good at. When he’s performing in this movie, you can’t take your eyes off of him, and it’s one of his best film soundtracks.

And yet there’s this nonsense of plot getting in the way.

Easily the worst scene is the one involving Elvis and the baby. The baby won’t stop crying, and Elvis tries everything to shut him up, and it finally works when he sings. But the scene goes on forever. I guess it was aiming for comedy, but it just really doesn’t work.

Despite the many lows of this movie, the soundtrack still is fantastic, and there are flashes of Elvis as a charming personality outside the singing.

Rating: 5/10
