Movie Review: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

Okay, so he’s got a really silly name, but Destoroyah is a pretty great looking monster. It’s a wonderful kaiju design, and I like how we see it in more than one form.

The final form is obviously the best

Godzilla has a nice new redesign as well, as he appears to be bleeding fire. It’s pretty cool.

The plot of the movie explains it all, of course. Godzilla’s heart is basically a nuclear reactor (I’m thinking this year’s Godzilla KOTM took a few ideas from this), and the big guy is going to die when his heart explodes.

It’s a pretty dramatic plot, and I really appreciate how long it took Godzilla to become a good guy here in this second series of films. And with him basically fighting what looks like a giant version of Satan, you really root for him.

There isn’t a ton of monster action, but what’s there is pretty good. I like the scenes with the little Destoroyahs; it’s like something out of Starship Troopers almost.

This is definitely a solid movie. It’s no masterpiece, perhaps, but it has better storytelling than most movies in the series, and a great villain.

Rating: 7/10
