Movie Review: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)

Ignoring the events of all Godzilla films but the original, the plot picks up almost 50 years later, with Japan having been substantially changed from the events of the first Godzilla attack and the occasional Godzilla appearance since then.

We have more of a focus on the military than usual, this time on a special Godzilla task force known as the G-Graspers.

The G-Graspers are pretty badass, even climbing onto Godzilla’s back to do shit.

And Godzilla continues to look pretty great. The costume is wonderful, and it’s a shame this millennium series has so much bad CGI, because when everything is practical, it’s all pretty convincing (for a Godzilla movie, anyway).

Megaguirus is another giant insect kaiju, somewhat resembling Battra, I’d argue, but still remaining a unique creation.

It takes a long time for Megaguirus to reach its final form, making this movie pretty slow.

Despite some early flashes with the G-Graspers, this movie is largely stuff we’ve seen before, and usually better. It’s a middle-of-the-road entry in the series.

Rating: 5/10
