Movie Review: Gozu (2003)
Takashi Miike is a master at blending genres, and that’s on full display in this yakuza-ghost-horror-comedy. It’s far from his best film, but I do love when he works with actor Sho Aikawa, who does a nice job here playing a mentally unstable gangster.
Would have liked to see more of him, of course, as he’s not really the lead, but I’ll take what I can get.
Like with virtually every Takashi Miike film I’ve seen, explaining the plot is pretty difficult to do. That’s not, of course, to say that there is no plot. But it’s definitely unconventional. It’s an experience.
It’s disturbing, it’s funny, and it’s definitely memorable. It features plenty of things I’ve never seen before, as is to be expected from a fucked up Takashi Miike film. And it’s pretty good.
