Movie Review: Hackers (1995)

Hackers is a strange movie. It’s dated very horribly, and its plot is incomprehensible, and yet it is still entertaining. The characters and performances are all so over the top, most notably Matthew Lillard.

Angelina Jolie is actually the most grounded/normal in here.

The movie tries really hard to be cool and hip. It’s actually not an enviable task for director Iain Softley (K-PAX) because he has to render what isn’t visual, into the visual. The result is something that looks like a giant music video. There are some creative and fun shots, but mostly the film is just strange.

It is bold and stylistic, though, and very colorful. It’s not a bad movie to look at. And it’s reasonably fun. But it is pretty embarrassing, too. The ’90s were a strange time.

Rating: 3/10
