Movie Review: In the Bleak Midwinter (1995)

I really, really miss this fucking Kenneth Branagh. He used to be such a great filmmaker. Nobody, to date, has done Shakespeare better on film, and apparently, nobody does people struggling to do Shakespeare better.

This movie has a bit of a Christopher Guest feel to it, but I was also reminded of Woody Allen. Sure, the characters are a bit goofier than in your typical Woody Allen movie, but the movie’s really subtle and uses its characters and very witty dialogue for the laughs.

And it is a very funny movie, though it’s possible that your knowledge of Shakespeare needs to be pretty high to enjoy it to its fullest. Perhaps it’s a bit inside baseball, but I love the Bard, so I really enjoyed it.
