Movie Review: Iron Man 2 (2010)

This movie is a giant mess. It’s clear that the studio was more interested in setting up other movies in the MCU than in actually telling a single story here.

And it’s a shame, too. Apparently Jon Favreau’s vision for the film ended up being very different from what he was ultimately able to make. Even Mickey Rourke, who apparently went to great lengths to develop his character of Ivan Vanko/Whiplash was upset with what was actually in the film. And I don’t blame him. The performance comes off as embarrassing.

The biggest problem with this movie is there are no likable characters. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) started out the first movie like a complete asshole, sure, but he had an arc that made him not just a compelling but a sympathetic character. Here, he’s just a giant asshole from the start, and doesn’t really change.

And it’s not like there’s anyone likable as far as supporting characters go. Sam Rockwell’s performance is at least very entertaining.

Once again, the climax here is a giant mess, and there’s not a compelling villain. This is a mediocre film in every way imaginable.

Rating: 4/10
