Movie Review: Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020)

--

The second Psych movie is a solid effort, though it’s not as good as the first one, I don’t think. It certainly has its moments, but it has the problem that a lot of the later episodes did: it’s too goofy.

Still, with the cast as enjoyable as this, I’ll take a little bit of goofy.

This movie takes Shawn and Gus away from San Francisco, and back to the far more familiar Santa Barbara. They are investigating a near-fatal shooting of Lassiter, not wanting anybody to know they’re investigating it. But Juliet is also investigating, and hoping Shawn doesn’t know.

This movie pays attention to continuity of the last movie, notably with Gus and his girlfriend, Selen (Jazmyn Simon). I don’t like this character, and it feels like they wrote her into these movies just to give Gus a love interest, since Shawn is now married. She’s not needed in the story, as nice as it is to see Gus settle down.

This movie has a lot of in-jokes that reference either the actors or the show itself. Shawn refers to their fans and how he’s never actually seen riding a motorcycle.

Shawn also references the television show that James Roday is currently on, which is fun.

The movie’s messy, stupid, but also quite fun. It’s a below-average episode, essentially, but if you’re a fan of the show, you should enjoy this.

Rating: 6/10
