Movie Review: Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

I can definitely understand why this movie has become somewhat of a cult classic. It’s a weird dark comedy dystopian horror musical, and it’s violent, gory, and weird.

It’s largely quite enjoyable, with almost a steampunk aesthetic, some good actors (Paul Sorvino and Anthony Head really stand out). The problem is the music kind of sucks.

It gets better. The first few songs are just awful. And it doesn’t stay that bad. I’d say the musical highlight is “Zydrate Anatomy.”

But with so many moving peices to this story, some truly bad music the best of which never really is all that great, and some genuinely bad performances (Bill Moseley and Alexa Vega), the movie just doesn’t work that well as a whole.
