Movie Review: Rio Lobo (1970)

This movie’s kind of bland. You might think the problem is a 63-year-old John Wayne in the lead, but really he’s fine. He was never a great actor, so he’s no real better or worse in this than he is in anything else.

The supporting cast isn’t the best either. But it’s typically Wayne’s presence itself (not his acting ability by any means) that elevates the material. I don’t think that’s the case here.

Could it be that this movie is directed by Howard Hawks, who in his last film, just didn’t have it anymore? I’m thinking that’s the case for the legendary director of Scarface, Red River, and His Girl Friday.

At any rate, watching it is a bit of a dull experience. It’s not a bad movie exactly, but it doesn’t leave you much to latch onto.
