Movie Review: Slender Man (2018)

Slender Man is fucking awful. I’m curious how much of how bad it is is because of the controversy surrounding the famous Slender Man stabbings, which happened in the city where I went to high school: Waukesha, Wisconsin. Because it does appear to be pretty cut down and trimmed around.

I think Slender Man as a figure is pretty creepy, but he certainly works best in photograph form. He’s creepiest when he’s just in the background of an old photograph. When he’s interacting with people, it just doesn’t have the same effect. I don’t think it’s easy to make a good Slender Man movie, and this one certainly fails.

Joey King does her best with the material, but the material itself is so unbelievably bad. The dialogue is some of the worst I’ve ever witnessed in film (“Like a computer virus that infects your hard drive, but instead of your hard drive, it’s your brain”).

It’s very, very bad, and it has few if any redeeming qualities. There are probably worse modern horror movies out there, but those at least offer some comedy.
