Movie Review: Stephen King’s It (1990)
At over three hours in length, this miniseries/movie is more than a little bit of a slog to sit through. It’s a relatively faithful adaption of a novel that on its surface, seems almost unfilmable, as a book that jumps around between two different narratives — those of the kids, and those of the adults.
And the movei falls into some problems. Mainly that while the kids stuff is alright, the adult stuff is borderline unwatchable.
The saving grace here is Tim Curry as Pennywise, who gives a truly menacing performance.
He’s good, but I think we see too much of him. The longer his scenes go on, the less scary he gets. Though, paradoxically, we also don’t see nearly enough of him, because he’s just about the only compelling performer here.
There’s really nothing here that justifies the runtime. It doesn’t feel grand. It just feels uneven, and boring.
