Movie Review: Straight Outta Compton (2015)

I really enjoyed this movie, but it’s got its problems. It’s a movie that’s produced by both Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, so of course it feels like we get their points of view a lot more than we get from the late Eazy-E. There’s even a pointless mention of Beats at the end of the movie, because few like stroking their egos as much as Dre.

But the movie’s solid. The cast is really good. Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., plays his father here, and he’s very good, and really easy to believe in the role obviously, with his looks. The same is true for Jason Mitchell, who’s simply some of the best casting I’ve ever seen in a biopic like this.

I’m not the biggest N.W.A. fan, but this is certainly an interesting look at an important moment in time in pop culture. The film feels a little too long, as what goes on in the second half of the movie isn’t nearly as interesting as the first half. But it’s well written and well acted all the way through.

Rating: 7/10
