Movie Review: Superman III (1983)

Richard Pryor may be a fantastic comedic talent. I’m not about to deny that. But that doesn’t mean he fits right in to a Superman movie. It’s really awkward.

This movie does very little right. The full embrace of slapstick just doesn’t work. The Richard Donner movie was silly, sure, but it was silly in sort of a family-friendly way, and in a way that Christopher Reeve excelled. Reeve is still the best part of this movie, but really he’s the only part that works.

Some of the effects are kind of neat, too, I guess. There are a couple setpieces I enjoyed. But the silly tone, the awkward Richard Pryor comedy…it’s mostly a disaster.

Rating: 3/10
