Movie Review: The Abyss (1989)

The Abyss is a reasonably entertaining and tense sci-fi thriller, but it takes a long time to get going. The second half is very good, but I found the first half pretty dull.

The movie takes itself seriously, but there are some out of place attempts at humor with some of the characters. Despite that, the movie remains dramatic and quite intelligent.

This movie has a reputation for its visual effects, as it proved to be groundbreaking in computer generated imagery. With that said, there isn’t a lot of CG compared to more modern movies, and it still looks decent today, but the visuals are unlikely to dazzle as they did back in the day. I think if the movie had a stronger story, it would have aged better, because it’s clear that in many ways, the movie is visually driven.
