Movie Review: The Grandmaster (2013)

Wong Kar-wai is an incredible filmmaker. Sure, this is nowhere near as good as Days of Being Wild, which might be the greatest Hong Kong film ever made, but he still adds so many unique touches that make this seem like so much more than just a martial arts movie. It’s a beautiful work of art.

It’s just so well choreographed and well shot. Even if this kind of movie isn’t normally your cup of tea, I’d imagine you’d find a lot to appreciate in it.

A final complaint I have is with the true story of Ip Man himself, of course. I don’t know how much of this is legitimately true and how much of it is just kind of a historical figure having a mythos about him, but at any rate, why do we have to take so much interest in him training Bruce Lee? That might be like the least interesting thing in his life, and this is coming from a Bruce Lee Fan.

Anyways, it’s a good movie, but it’s a movie I connect with more because of the filmmaking than the story.

Rating: 7/10
