Movie Review: The Hunger Games (2012)

The Hunger Games is a solid, but unspectacular movie. The movie sort of has obnoxious direction, with annoying handheld camera stuff that really distracts a lot at least in the beginning, but you sort of get eased into it. There’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t work here. The look of the film, with its flamboyant costumes and makeup, seems like it should be comedic.

What does work, though, are the performances. Jennifer Lawrence is really good as Katniss Everdeen, and her story is a fairly emotional one.

A lot of the older, more established actors do quite a good job in supporting roles as well, primarily Woody Harrelson and Stanley Tucci.

It’s a solid start for a franchise. It’s no masterpiece, but it’s entertaining enough.
