Movie Review: The Mutations (1974)

Also known as The Freakmaker, The Mutations concerns a scientist who for whatever reason wants to crossbreed humans with plants. It’s certainly a weird story, but the great Donald Pleasence is mostly up to the task.

Of course, things don’t always go so smoothly and for those who don’t turn out, they’re given to a circus freakshow, where they’re essentially enslaved. It’s no Tod Browning’s Freaks, but it’s probably just as weird.

The freak makeup is pretty good for the most part, and the movie looks very good overall. Pleasence’s performance is solid if unspectacular, but there’s not much humanity to be found in this movie either from him or from his college student victims, and that’s really where the movie falls a bit flat for me.

Rating: 5/10
