Movie Review: Time After Time (1979)

This has a plot that would probably make more sense as the plot of a comedy film. Both Jack the Ripper and H.G. Wells travel through time to end up in modern day San Francisco. And while the movie is very funny with its fish out of water stuff, for the most part, it plays things straight. But with Malcolm McDowell playing H.G. Wells and David Warner playing Jack the Ripper, you could be in far worse hands.

McDowell is incredibly believable in the fish out of water stuff, and he provides the kind of class necessary to buy him in the more dramatic stuff. He actually has a charming love plot with Mary Steenburgen, who apparently was the go-to for love interests in 19th-century related time travel movies.

And David Warner is of course threatening as hell.

I liked this movie a lot. It was s ort of a pleasant surprise, as I really didn’t even know the first thing about this plot. It’s genuinely weird, and it could have been a far worse movie than it is.
