Movie Review: Total Recall (1990)

Total Recall is incredibly entertaining the whole way through. It’s a mind-bending science fiction story that succeeds in its plotting, its violent action, its worldbuilding, and its ridiculous Arnold Schwarzenegger performance.

I laugh a lot when watching this movie, and a lot of that is Arnold’s performance, certainly. But the movie also has a good sense of humor, and it never takes itself too seriously.

Schwarzenegger makes for a compelling lead because he’s constantly on the run, learning things that are both shocking to him and the audience. It’s almost like North by Northwest in the sense that we get just a little bit of this man’s normal life, and then everything goes to shit, and he’s on the run for the rest of the movie. And it’s a lot of fun.
