Movie Review: Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)
This movie truly embraces the schlock that all the other movies in the series have sort of skirted around. This is big. It’s dumb. It’s fairly entertaining.
And it still misses the mark for the most part.
The visual effects don’t help. There are some good ones, but the werewolves themselves would make you think this is one of the older movies in the series. They look bad, except for a few very brief shots where there’s some practical stuff.
I do confess to enjoying the fight Selene had with a werewolf on the frozen lake, but that’s mostly because it is so stupid.
I don’t understand this movie’s combining swords and guns. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense to have swords and shields when there are automatic weapons, but whatever.
The biggest problem this movie has is that when Kate Beckinsale’s not on screen, there is nothing to keep your interest. I’ve said this before. Beckinsale’s not great in these movies, but there’s something about her, I guess. And Theo James is just plain bad.
I guess I’m not giving the movie enough credit. Lara Pulver’s a lot of fun here, and most of her scenes aren’t with Beckinsale.
But she’s definitely the exception to the rule.
