Movie Review: Vampyr (1932)

The very existence of this film is fascinating to me. It wasn’t a silent movie, but director Carl Theodor Dreyer had only made silent films prior to this, so he still included a number of cards in between shots to use in place of dialogue. And on top of that, we lost the sound prints. This movie was made in German, French, and English, but the English versions have been recreated, since we no longer have that.

And the movie is pretty interesting, as well. The camera moves a lot for the early days of cinema, and it’s all gorgeous to look at.

The story isn’t the most engaging, but I wonder how much of that is because of what’s been lost, or how much of it was stylistically designed to be a little confusing and strange.

At any rate, I really enjoyed it.
