Movie Review: Victor Crowley (2017)
To some extent, every Hatchet movie is the same. Incredibly violent gore, bad misfires at comedy, and a bunch of cameos by horror icons, an obnoxious role by Parry Shen. The latter two can be frustrating.
I find the horror cameo thing frustrating because most of the time, they’re just cameos. If these horror icons were really playing interesting characters, I’d definitely like it more. I also find it annoying that the bar for “horror icon” is pretty damn low. In the previous movies, for example, I can safely say someone like Robert Englund and Tony Todd earned their status. But Caroline Williams? Zach Galligan?
Here, the horror icon cast is Felissa Rose of Sleepaway Camp, and she’s honestly the best part of the movie. She’s really funny actually.
She plays Andrew Yong’s (Parry Shen) agent. And I must say that even Shen is pretty good here. I’ve found him really annoying throughout the series, but he succeeds in a more dramatic role.
It’s not really a good movie, but it does work in some ways that the others don’t. It’s a reasonably good comedy. As a horror movie, it’s still really lacking.
The horror elements aren’t taken at all seriously, and that’s frustrating. Again, director Adam Green seems to think he’ll please fans with just the shear amount of blood and guts on screen, and that doesn’t really work for me. Without a story, without suspense, that all feels empty.
