Movie Review: Wish Upon (2017)

Wish Upon is a story everyone is familiar with — there’s a music box that grants wishes to its finder, but at a cost, causing people to die. Yet somehow, despite the tired premise, this movie manages to be memorable.

Just not in a good way.

Joey King (The Conjuring, Slender Man) plays the lead, Clare, a vain and unlikable high school student that gets this box and immediately wishes for a bully to “rot.” It’s a bad performance, too, but I don’t blame her too much, considering how awful most of the dialogue is.

This movie is the furthest thing from scary, and it’s largely funny. It leaves you with a great laugh moment at the very end, but the laughs keep coming throughout. The dialogue is so bizarre, the character motivations so confusing and strange, that it’s very watchable despite being awful.
