Night Gallery episode review — 3.11 — Something in the Woodwork

Original air date: January 14, 1973
Director: Edward M. Abroms
Writer: Rod Serling

Rating: 5/10

This is Rod Serling’s final script for the series. It’s disappointing. While his best work on this show hasn’t really compared to his best work on The Twilight Zone, his scripts have generally been much better than the other writers. For this episode, though, that’s not really the case.

It’s a haunted house story with a recently divorced couple, Molly (Geraldine Page) and Charlie (Leif Erickson). Molly’s the one in the haunted house, and she’s not doing too well with the divorce and everything. She’s lonely and still a bit jealous.

We do see a ghost, and it looks pretty pathetic. It talks, too, in a dull, boring monotone. It’s not frightening or threatening in any way, and it really drags the episode down.

The acting is decent, the dialogue is pretty good. The story just lacks thrills.
