Psych episode review — 5.12 — Dual Spires

Original air date: December 1, 2010
Director: Matt Shakman
Writers: Bill Callahan and James Roday

Rating: 9/10

You wouldn’t really know it aside from this episode (and the casting of Ray Wise), but apparently everyone behind Twin Peaks — perhaps chiefly star James Roday — are huge Twin Peaks fans. When I first saw this episode, it was before I had ever seen Twin Peaks. I knew it was parodying/tributing something, because it is so weird, but I didn’t know what.

This is a loving tribute. There are a lot of Easter eggs, some being easy to see, and others much more hidden.

It starts with the cast. Dana Ashbrook, Catherine E. Coulson, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, and more from the original cast of Twin Peaks show up to play very different characters here, and that’s a lot of fun.

For my money, my favorite part is Ray Wise, who of course had already been a part of the show, so they have kind of a hackneyed reason to get him involved, but his white hair is probably my favorite laugh of the episode.

There’s nothing too special about the plot, but there are plenty of good laughs.
