Sam ends up in the body of one of his ancestors during the Civil War, which conflicts with what we’ve been told about time travel here, considering it’s only supposed to be within his lifetime. This is addressed in the episode, but never really explained.
At any rate, Sam is a Union soldier who develops a relationship with a Confederate woman who he knows he’s supposed to marry. Meanwhile, though, he’s trying to help slaves escape.
It’s quite entertaining, and Kate McNeil does a fine job in a supporting role. The ending is a bit predictable, but I rather enjoyed this episode.
