Ranking All the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movies

8. Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) — 2/10

Probably as wrongheaded as you can make a movie in this series. Not completely without some entertainment value, but it’s treatment of Leatherface and his family is just baffling.

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) — 3/10

I’ve seen all these movies relatively recently, and this is definitely the one I remember the least. It’s not terrible, but it doesn’t offer a whole lot.

6. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) — 3/10

This movie has a few moments and ideas that work pretty well, but it’s almost a remake of the first movie, just significantly worse. Ken Foree and Viggo Mortensen are pretty fun, though, although the movie has almost all the violence cut out.

5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995) — 4/10

If you want to argue this is the worst movie in the series, you have a lot of ground to stand on. Personally, I find it more entertaining than most of the sequels, almost completely because Matthew McConaughey’s performance is so gleefully over the top.

4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) — 4/10

A lot of horror fans really seem to like this movie, but it just doesn’t work for me. It’s not bad, though I do disagree with the categorization that this movie gets put under as a “dark comedy.” It’s not a dark comedy. It’s a farce.

3. Leatherface (2017) — 5/10

The movie that literally nobody asked for (and barely anyone saw) isn’t that bad. Its story is truly different, and there are some good performances.

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) — 5/10

The remake isn’t half bad. It makes some effective changes to the original story and has some legitimately scary and tense moments, even if it does lean too heavy on the gore at times.

  1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) — 7/10

Does it need to be stated? This movie is incredibly effective as a piece of horror cinema, and was truly groundbreaking. And it still holds up.
