Ranking the Movies from the new Planet of the Apes Series
From worst to best:
3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) — 6/10
It’s not a bad movie, but it took this series some time to really find its voice. The biggest mistake here is clearly casting James Franco, who’s quite bad, but in his defense, all the human characters are pretty dull. The real star is Andy Serkis and the visual effects.
2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) — 7/10
This movie has an excellent script in terms of building tension. Unfortunately, when everything goes down, it’s not quite as good as you’d hope. The movie is still quite good overall, but the movie does become a bit of a mess towards the end.
- War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) — 8/10
For what it’s worth, I think this has the most to say in terms of social critique, and that makes it the most interesting. This movie is basically told entirely from the apes’ point of view, which is something that would have been unimaginable even ten years ago. Needless to say, the visual effects really help the film.
