Ranking the Phantasm Movies

From worst to best:

5. Phantasm: Ravager (2016) — 4/10

This movie has some really interesting ideas, but ultimately is far too cheap to fully realize them. It’s a missed opportunity.

4. Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1994) — 4/10

Action packed and full of one-liners, this Phantasm movie in some ways feels the biggest of all of them. It’s not great, and some of the zombie stuff is too dumb and silly, but it has its moments.

3. Phantasm II (1988) — 6/10

With a somewhat big budget, Phantasm II doubles down on incomprehensible plot while giving you the gore you’d expect. It’s an entertaining movie, but definitely has some missteps early on.

2. Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998) — 6/10

This movie gives us some interesting backstory on Angus Scrimm’s Tall Man character that isn’t necessary, but is nice to have. It also uses unused footage from the original Phantasm, making the whole saga truly feel unified.

  1. Phantasm (1979) — 6/10

Incredibly surreal, Phantasm is a remarkable film in its own way. It’s sort of one-of-a-kind, and even the sequels could never quite duplicate its magical appeal. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s earned its spot in horror history.
