Second Viewing: Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (2013)

The Alan Partridge movie is pretty damn good, but you definitely need to be into the character before watching this. I don’t recommend this be the first Partridge foray for anyone, especially an American, because they’re going to be wondering what’s up with that guy with a weird accent who poops in a box, and all that shit.

But the movie features some tremendous humour, including some of the best in-studio Partridge lines to date, like the whole midday thing, and of course “That was soft rock cocaine enthusiasts Fleetwood Mac,” which has become a line that I use in my everyday life.

The movie’s consistently funny, and while it has all those classic Partridge moments we’ve come to expect from TV, the movie also branches out into somewhat new territory. Alan Partridge has never been particularly plot-driven, but he sort of needed to be here with this being a film, and I think the Gibbons brothers and director Declan Lowney have done a fine job of that.

Rating: 8/10
