Second Viewing: Bride of the Monster (1955)

Bride of the Monster isn’t exactly one of the best b-movies ever, like you might be led to believe. It’s enjoyable to be sure, but the laughs are never as big as in something like Plan 9. I enjoyed Bela Lugosi’s awful performance, of course. I enjoyed the guy who changed his accent in every scene he was in. And I enjoyed that the last 10 minutes or so are almost exclusively Lugosi’s stunt double, with the occasional closeup of him that doesn’t match.

It’s a fun movie, but it’s not the masterpiece of terrible b-movie filmmaking that might match its reputation. I’ve seen it a number of times now, and it never fails to entertain me, but it also feels like it’s missing something to truly make it one of the greats.
