Second Viewing: Candyman (1992)

A lot of people seem to believe this is one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It’s not too difficult to understand why. Tony Todd is a legend, and I love how this story is paced. It has some really creepy stuff over at Cabrini-Green, and when Candyman shows up, there are some fantastic moments.

But the direction is a little annoying, too, honestly. There are a lot of false jump scares early on, like a lot more than should be in a movie of this quality. And a lot more than should happen in relatively normal settings, like a college. But they’re there, and they’re obnoxious.

It’s why I could see if this movie had a different director (a John Carpenter or a Wes Craven), I’d be more likely to see this as the masterpiece that so many else do. Until then, I just think it’s a solid, suspenseful, and interesting supernatural slasher movie.

Rating: 7/10
