Second Viewing: Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Cannibal Holocaust attempts to be the most disturbing movie ever made, and it’s difficult to deny that it more or less accomplished that, based on all the controversy. A good deal of the controvery is absolutely deserved. This is a movie that literally kills multiple animals on screen, and that’s beyond messed up.

And there is a strange irony here. The movie’s incredibly exploitative of animals, of the environment, and of the locals of Venezuela and Colombia. And yet it’s also about just that.

I don’t want to say it’s self aware, but it the whole “I wonder who the real cannibals are” is accidentally the perfect statement on this kind of exploitation film.

Rating: 6/10
