Second Viewing: Emmanuelle (1974)
Sylvia Kristel is fantastic as Emmanuelle. Maybe the movie isn’t that great, but she gives a real, honest, deep performance.
She seems very sophisticated at times, but also when she has her relationship with Bee, it’s clear that she’s not too worldly, and is actually a little immature. These were my favorite scenes of the movie.
Eventually she hangs out with Mario, and the movie takes a hard turn. Suddenly it’s about a man controlling her and trying to get her to experiment sexually, even though she’s kind of already been doing that the entire film.
The movie’s more than a little uneven, but Kristel makes the most of her role.
