Second Viewing: Freaks (1932)

Freaks is a magnificent movie, and one of the best examples of how weird and interesting pre-code Hollywood was. It’s probably Tod Browning’s best film. While it may not be as classic as Dracula, I think it’s much more interesting and complicated.

I think I respect this movie more than I like it, though I do like it a lot.

This is a movie that for about 80 years couldn’t have been cast the way it was. And once we hit the point where we probably would cast a lot of these kinds of actors, we hit the point where this movie couldn’t be made. So it’s a true curiosity, but it’s also a very good movie.
