Second Viewing: Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998)

Even though I think the movie ends more on a whimper than a bang, this is still a solid movie, and probably the second best in the always-interesting Phantasm series.

I like the first half more than the second, as it has a lot of buildup to it. As the mystery of the plot (not just of this movie, but of the entire series) begins to unravel, it’s not quite as interesting.

And I don’t mean to say that like everything is explained. Coscarelli clearly doesn’t want to do that.

I compared the original Phantasm to something of David Lynch, and you can say the same with this one. This reminds me a bit of Twin Peaks: The Return, in how it uses old footage (this time stuff from the first movie that was never used) to enhance the story and lend some answers, or at least additional information.

The cast continues to be very appealing. Angus Scrimm is the Tall Man, and you have to love Reggie Bannister in these sequels.
