Second Viewing: Soylent Green (1973)

You may only know Soylent Green for the twist ending. That was my case before I ever saw this movie. But honestly it’s worth watching. And it takes place in 2022, so if you want to see a bleak vision of what people 50 years ago thought today would be like, check it out.

It still has its relevance today. This movie’s largely about the divide between rich and poor, in a bleak landscape that includes a food shortage, overpopulation, and rampant pollution.

It’s also a future that includes a pretty damn good cast including Charlton Heston (who’s honestly not that great here) and Edward G. Robinson in his final (and a fantastic) role.

The movie has some good stortyelling, as it allows you to learn about the world visually. It’s a solid mystery.

It’s not a fantastic movie, but it does enough right. It’s not particularly entertaining, but it’s an interesting and incredibly bleak view of the future.
