Second Viewing: The Conjuring 2 (2016)

The Conjuring 2 is pretty good, and perhaps even close to being great. It does so many things right, with so many fantastic sequences. The one that really stands out for me is anything involving that chair.

The scene where they question her is one of the best horror sequences this century, I think. And there are plenty of other great scenes. James Wan is so good at not just jump scares, but in moving the camera to pull your attention away from something.

Where this movie falters is a bit with the plot. The story isn’t too engaging, and the movie kind of rushes through it, in part because the Warrens are so removed from most of it for the first half of the movie. As much as I enjoy the characters of the Warrens, their inclusion really isn’t justified until they show up to England. And I’m not sure how you fix that.

This movie’s really effective, but it’s also a bit too over the top, and very loud. I’d say it’s worth it, but it’s not perfect.

Rating: 7/10
