Second Viewing: The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)

The Curse of Frankenstein is a really great reimagining of the Frankenstein story. It’s really a testament to the strength of the Mary Shelley story that you have so many adaptations — most of which take tremendous liberties with the story — and many of them are still great.

The real winner here is Peter Cushing, who delivers an absolutely phenomenal performance as Dr. Frankenstein.

Nearly everything with the monster is underwhelming, so what makes the movie worth it? The character, and Cushing’s performance. He plays Frankenstein as an absolute maniac, a man teetering on the edge of sanity with little to no regard for people around him. He’s a complete asshole, and just so much fun to watch because you never know what he’s going to do next.
