The Magicians episode review — 4.10 — All That Hard, Glossy Armor

Original air date: March 27, 2019
Director: Shannon Kohli
Writers: John McNamara and Mike Moore

Rating: 6/10

I feel like there’s a bit of diminishing returns when it comes to the musical numbers in this show. When they did the Les Mis number before Eliot’s big sword fight, it was a lot of fun. When they did the Queen/David Bowie song, it was more frustrating than anything. I suppose Eliot’s little song and dance is more fun than that.

And Jade Tailor absolutely kills it when she gets involved.

And I do suppose it’s kind of fun that this is all a hallucination as a result of Margo licking a lizard.

Margo finds herself in a desert camp with a bunch of weirdos, and figures out that there are spirits of women entrapped, which she eventually frees, and finds some weapons that she thinks will help her save Eliot from the Monster.

There’s also a pretty creepy scene of Eliot in the non-magical world (being inhabited by the Monster), where he tries to find a body or home or whatever for his “sister.”

This episode is a decent amount of fun. The Eliot/Monster stuff only kind of works for me, as it feels he’s been absent from the main characters’ struggle to the point where he doesn’t really feel like a threat until now when he kills someone. But Margo wandering in the desert is pretty interesting.
