The Twilight Zone (2020) episode review — 2.4 — Ovation

Original air date: June 25, 2020
Director: Ana Lily Amirpour
Writers: Emily C. Chang and Sara Amini (story by David Well)

Rating: 4/10

Ana Lily Amirpour was responsible for one of the best episodes of the first season, but here, something’s just kind of off, like in the last two episodes.

A struggling singer gets a big break on a popular American Idol-type show, and gets her chance to shine, but the fame gets to her head.

We’ve seen this story like a hundred times before, and it doesn’t feel like it needs that extra supernatural element, but of course that’s what we have here, in the form of a medallion that enables Jasmine (Jurnee Smollett) to write hit pop songs.

Smollett does a fine job, but the story here is just pretty weak. I’m not sure what else to say. It’s barely mediocre.
