Third Viewing: Saw (2004)

As a high concept thrill-ride, Saw is probably better as a premise than it is a movie. It’s kind of sloppy and suffers pretty obviously from having a low budget in parts. But when it works, it works.

The script isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty damn good. It sets up nicely for an incredible ending, and has tremendous unpredictability throughout. The script is of course by Leigh Whannell, and the directing is handled by his buddy James Wan.

Like the script, Wan’s direction is often a bit sloppy and it’s definitely dated. But there are a few sequences here that are incredible, and I have to credit so much of that to the direction.
