McCurdy Field, with its storied past and vibrant present, serves as the perfect muse for our latest creation. The Asbury and Jenkins Wool Coaches Jacket is not just a piece of clothing; it’s a wearable piece of history, designed to capture the essence of McCurdy Field’s timeless spirit.

Nestled in the heart of Frederick, Maryland, at the intersection of South Jefferson Street and Scholl’s Lane, lies a baseball field steeped in history and local lore. McCurdy Field, a name synonymous with Frederick County sports, may not boast the size or amenities of modern stadiums, but its rich past and enduring spirit have made it a beloved landmark in the community.

From hosting the Washington Redskins’ inaugural game to being the first home of the Frederick Keys, McCurdy Field’s story is a tapestry of memorable moments and legendary figures.

The Early Days: A Field is Born

Our journey begins in 1924, with the creation of the Frederick County Athletic Field, later known as McCurdy Field. Named after Dr. Ira McCurdy, the head of the fundraising committee, the field was constructed for a modest $15,000. Its grandstands and bleachers could accommodate 2,500 spectators, encircling a vast playing area with staggering dimensions: 348 feet to left field, 506 to right, and an almost mythical 600 feet to center.

The field’s inaugural event was a Blue Ridge League game on May 13, 1924, attracting a crowd of 3,000. Despite the Frederick Hustlers’ loss to Hanover, the game marked the beginning of a rich sporting tradition.

A Hub for Historic Moments

McCurdy Field quickly became a focal point for significant sports events. In 1937, it welcomed the at the time Washington Redskins for their first exhibition game after moving from Boston. The Philadelphia Athletics used it for spring training during World War II, and it hosted three Babe Ruth World Series in the 1980s.

Perhaps most notably, it was the first stomping ground for the Frederick Keys, a minor league baseball team, in 1989. The field’s role in bringing minor league baseball to Frederick cannot be overstated, contributing significantly to the county’s economic and cultural landscape.

A Field of Dreams and Renovations

The field’s history isn’t without its challenges. In the early 1970s, the original stands were condemned, threatening the field’s future. However, thanks to the efforts of community leaders like Bob Marendt, a former foul ball chaser turned renovation head, McCurdy Field was reborn. By 1974, new metal bleachers and clubhouse facilities were in place, ensuring the field’s continuation as a sports hub.

McCurdy Field Today: Legacy and Community

Today, McCurdy Field primarily serves youth baseball and football teams, continuing its legacy as a cradle for local sports talent. While it may no longer host teams like the Redskins or the Keys, its impact on Frederick County’s sports and economic landscape is indelible.

A Testament to Community Spirit

McCurdy Field stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Frederick’s community. It’s a place where legends like Babe Ruth and Sammy Baugh have graced the field, where local youths dream of their big break, and where the community comes together to celebrate its rich sporting heritage.
