For those that are not familiar, can you briefly describe Unmarshal, and what problems you are aiming to solve?

Manohar | Unmarshal

Unmarshal is a DeFi data network. We index, decode and serve data from multiple blockchains in multiple formats. We identify DeFi objects like tokens, protocol positions, price stores, and wallets, and build customized APIs on top of them and serve data in multiple formats like APIs, push notifications, websockets etc. Think about it as a single source for all blockchain data needs.

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

Cool! Let’s transition a bit towards the native token — MARSH. How does the MARSH token function within the platform and why is it needed?

Manohar | Unmarshal

MARSH plays a very important role in the Unmarshal network. Unmarshal is a decentralized network. We understand that as data grows, it will be impossible for just one team to cope with the requirements and indexing. We will decentralize our network to include data indexers, data decoders, and validators. Data users pay per query in MARSH and the fees will be shared across service providers. Network participants will stake and pay/receive incentives in MARSH,

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

Thank you for the elaboration. Could you share the development status and progress of the project thus far? Including the major partners and perhaps some operational data.

Manohar | Unmarshal

Unmarshal actually started as a product first company. We had a working product and clients even before we launched our website. Unmarshal was an Idea started while I was consulting for a DeFI project. We have indexed Binance smart chain, Ethereum, Polkadot, StaFi, and Edgeware. We will be indexing Algorand, Elrond, and Polygon in the near future. On the clients’ side, we have been announcing partnerships over the last few days. We have been helping Frontier, Zeroswap, Pandora, PolkaCover, Kira, and many more to be announced.

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

That is pretty impressive! May I ask who the users/clients are on your platform and what are some examples of use cases for them?

Manohar | Unmarshal

We are mostly a B2B project. our clients can be Wallets, Defi protocols, Exchanges and pretty much anyone who needs blockchain data. We are actually working on some cool B2C products as well.

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

What is your strategy in regards to attracting more users to your platform?

Manohar | Unmarshal

There are two kinds of users. The first is service users which are DeFi projects. And the other is service providers (data indexers, decoders and validators). For service users, we are actually adding more support to Layer 1 chains to help the developer community there. Our products should be our biggest advocates. We are also getting a lot of inbound requests. For service providers, who will have a massive role to play once our network is ready, we are planning to host hackathons and developer evangelist programs.

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

That is great! Let’s talk about the current landscape of other projects doing something similar. What separates you from some of the competitors?

Manohar | Unmarshal

We found a niche where there were no projects doing exactly what we do. However, The Graph, Covalent and Bitquery are in the same space. We differ from them in many ways, We provide data in richer form, In multiple formats like Notifications, APIs, Websockets and even CSV files if required. Unmarshal automatically indexes any new protocol. Unmarshal provides customized data. Existing players were too generic with limited APIs and limited data formats. As I started talking to more people, we felt that something was needed and started working on

Unmarshal. One thing that stands out about Unmarshal is decoded data. Data in itself is not useful. it has to be put into a context to turn it into meaningful information. What is stored on blockchain is a bunch of hashes and hexadecimals. We decode data to turn into useful information. For example, our transaction response has a description field that say “demo.eth sent 10 MARSH to receiver.eth”

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

That is pretty cool. Can you please elaborate on the goals you are aiming to achieve in 2021?

Manohar | Unmarshal

We have a pretty ambitious roadmap. we will start working on the decentralized network. Add useful products like a profit and loss engine, tax module, analytics dashboards etc. More about the roadmap can be found on https://unmarshal.io.

Mary Zheng | AscendEX

Cool!FInally, I have a non-project-related question — which sector of crypto markets excites you the most?

Manohar | Unmarshal

I love everything that web3 is bringing to this world. Everything about crypto is so cool. Bringing together financial tools in a decentralized way is a brilliant idea. I also love what NFTs can bring to the table.

Community Questions:

David Carey

NFT and Defi are some of the major trends in the crypto market and they are effectively expanding with many new projects advancing in the field. What do you think about the development of NFT and Defi? Which area are you focusing on at the moment? (DeFi, Staking, Dapps..) and what are your goals for this year?

Manohar | Unmarshal

You’re right. NFT and DeFi have huge potential. We are on the right track to support this growth. Unmarshal has already built NFT APIs. and will be working with some of your favourite NFT products. You can learn more here https://docs.unmarshal.io/nft-apis.

And as far as DeFi is concerned, It’s in our name: Multi-chain DeFi network.

ÇRYPTÖ DÜDË

How are functions such as scalability, workflow, databases, and user privacy protection deployed and handled? Where do you feel you need to improve in the future?

Manohar | Unmarshal

I think, the scale at which crypto is being adopted, all the infrastructure services would find it really hard to cope with the market growth. We have already been anticipating this and are working towards making the network as decentralized as possible to handle the scale.

Reinhard Van Astrea

You worked at the companies Gojek and Grab, what aspects of those experiences would you put into practice to make Unmarshal a successful project?

Manohar | Unmarshal

I was part of the booking and allocation team at Grab where we handled every single booking request made to Grab. I carry great lessons about building fault tolerant services and critical paths and handling at scale. I think all that will help us significantly.

Rıdvan Çetin

Can you name some of your project’s key achievements and what milestones are you currently working on?

Manohar | Unmarshal

We have close to 12 clients who we are already serving data and several others are in the process of integration. Our next major updates are notification services and a protocol indexing framework.
