From a world of the 1960s where we had batch processing, we moved through stand-along computes and onto distributed ones, and we are turning back to the concept of the mainframe, as it allows us to build machines which can focus on getting the work done, and in a secure manner.

So for many decades IBM were the only show in town when it came to computers, with classics such as the System/360. But they wrote themselves out of computing history by creating the IBM PC, and which created the room for others to recreate their BIOS and clone their approaches. So while they tried to pull the market back with new standards, it was up other companies, such as Compaq, to take over the leadership of the PC industry. Other, especially Microsoft and Intel, benefited greatly from IBM’s advance, and IBM finally gave up creating PC, and low-end workstations a few years ago. They have since successfully concentrated on mainframes, Big Data and Cloud Computer.

So after decades since the dawn of the PC, IBM are still a leader in mainframe computers, but now they have a new vision … a world where…
