5 Reasons to Write Under a Pen Name

When I first started blogging, one of the most important things to me was being transparent with my readers. As a confessional writer, I needed to share the parts of my life, and I wanted to with the utmost honesty that I could.

But for a long time, I held back. When it came to writing about my children’s relationship with their fathers, I held back, afraid I would hurt their feelings. When it came to talking about my mental health issues, I held back, not wanting to be judged as a single parent who struggled with many mental health issues.

For a long time, I refused to write about my sex life, afraid that my mother would read something and be ashamed of what I was writing about, and honestly, what I was doing with my life. It’s hard to write openly and sincerely when you feel like people are going to judge you.

While this is my main reason for writing under a pen name, there are plenty of reasons to write under a pen name. Some of them have to do with writing without boundaries and shame, but sometimes it’s as simple as needing your writing to reach different audiences.
