African head wraps are a perfect accessory and our favorite go-to protective style. Headwraps can protect hair from the elements and help retain moisture in stylish ways. A great headwrap can totally save a bad hair day and can be worked into any occasion or season.

To help get you going, we have 4 simple but gorgeous styles to try out. Before you wrap, remember to prep the hair. African-American hair needs a big boost of moisture to pamper the hair. Check out a few tips for prepping and protecting the hair before styling your headwrap.

How to Tie A Headwrap Bow

To achieve this style, begin by folding the headwrap over into two parts in the lengthwise direction.

Step 1: Gather your hair into a top ponytail. Place the fabric toward the back of your head, just below the nape of your neck. Pull both ends toward the front.

Step 2: Using the center of your head as a guide, tie the wrap into a knot.

Step 3: Twist and fold the headwrap into a large bow. Neatly tuck away the ends of the wrap to secure the fabric and you’re ready to go!

This headwrap is simply gorgeous and will have all eyes on you when worn.

Step 1: Pull your hair into a bun or ponytail tied toward the back of your neck.

Step 2: Select a large-sized piece of fabric and fold into a triangle. Place the scarf on your head and lay the longest edge across your hair’s edge.

Step 3: Cross each end over the other behind your head and pull in the opposite direction. Tie the wrap into a bow and secure it in place. Adjust the ends to create a cute flower effect and you’re ready to go!

After folding your wrap fabric into two equal-sized parts, follow these steps:

Step 1: Pull your hair into a high bun or ponytail to create fullness. If your hair is short, try a fabric bun to add some “bulk” under your headwrap.

Step 2: Place the center of the wrap around the back of your head and bring the two ends to the front. Think crisscross style for this step.

Step 3: Make a secure tie and place it at the center of your forehead while twirling the ends around toward the back. Tuck the ends securely into the folds in your headwrap. Repeat on the other side of your head as needed.

Adjust your wrap as you like for the shape of your face and you’re ready to go.

How to Tie a Headwrap Turban

To recreate this look, follow these steps:

Step 1: Start by folding your fabric in half. Place the fabric at the base of your head and pull the scarf toward the front of your head. Hold the fabric in front and gather the fabric in between your thumb and forefinger as you go.

Step 2: Separate both ends to tie a knot and begin twisting together. As you twist and wrap the fabric, adjust and smooth the fabric to fit the shape of your face.

Pro Tip: The key to this headwrap is to keep gathering within your fingers and wrapping firmly as you move along.

Step 3: Tuck the loose ends of the scarf into any of the folds you previously made. The look is complete when all loose ends are securely tucked away.

Keep tucking until the tail of the fabric is undetectable and you’re all set. Pair with some statement earrings and you’re ready to go.

Use these bonus tips and tricks to create beautiful looks that help you rock your headwrap styles in style!

  • Keep your headwrap from slipping by using wig caps or wig grips under the fabric
  • Prevent your hair from drying out while wearing your headwrap by using silk or satin-lined caps underneath wraps
