What does inclusion mean?

It means that all people — regardless of status, abilities and needs — are given equal rights, privileges, and opportunities; that nobody is left behind! The word ‘inclusion’ captures an all-embracing societal ideology. It is a term used by rights advocates for people with disabilities and special needs to be treated as equal in the society.

But inclusion doesn’t only refer to involving people with special needs. It can be about anyone! Specifically in the workplace, people in a team can be diverse, but they can embrace their differences and uniqueness, and create an ‘inclusive’ environment where they can leverage each other’s strengths and skills for the success of the team.

Another great example of inclusion is the Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach which we have incorporated in our Combinatorial Innovation methodology. HCD follows the standard design process of identifying the problem to solve, generating and refining ideas, prototyping, testing, and iterating until we produce a robust design. The difference is it places a much bigger emphasis on keeping the end user in the heart of the process.

Our newsletter this month focuses on inclusion. Find out what it takes and how you can take part to create a world where everyone has a voice, and where everyone matters.

We take a look at a case study on disability-inclusion in a WASH programme conducted by World Vision Lanka and Christian Blind Mission (CBM) Australia, in partnership with Disabled People’s Organisations and Civil Society Organisations to ensure meaningful community engagement.
